FSO Syrena Sport

Yesterday, I went to the Palace of Culture and Science to see a new exhibition dedicated to the most iconic automobiles of the Polish motor industry ("Perły motoryzacji w Polsce"). One of its absolute highlights was the FSO Syrena Sport. Designed in late 1950s, it was unlike any other Polish cars at the time. Two-seater roadster with sporty, aggressive looks was originally planned as a cabriolet, but due to problems with torsional rigidity the roof was attached to it permanently.

Most of the works on the car took place after working hours, pro bono. Once presented in 1960, Syrena Sport became a sensation, noted even by the foreign press. Nonetheless, most probably by a political decision, the prototype never made it into production. It is completely incomprehensible that the only car ever made (red with black roof) was officially destroyed in 1975.

This particular example is a replica built in 2012 as part of a marketing campaign sponsored by Żołądkowa Gorzka. Although it bases on Triumph Spitfire, the looks are most possibly similar to the prototype. Supported by original photographs and models, the body was computer-designed and then carefully reconstructed.
